And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

Verse 1 is found in chapter 2 of Judges. The angel of the Lord comes to Bochim and rebukes Israel because it has not torn down the altars of the inhabitants of the land. The issue is no longer merely military but also cultic: Israel has left structures intact that can lead to idolatry. The people’s weeping shows recognition of the rebuke, but the text leaves open the question of whether this repentance will produce lasting transformation.
