Verse 14 is found in chapter 2 of Judges. Israel begins serving the Baals and the images of Ashtoreth, provoking the Lord’s anger. The theological cycle of the book is established: abandonment of God, oppression, and loss of the protection Israel had received. Defeat is not presented simply as military inferiority but as a consequence of covenant unfaithfulness.
