Verse 7 is found in chapter 2 of Judges. The death of Joshua and the generation that knew his works marks a historical transition. The new generation does not know the Lord in the same way or remember the works he had performed. The fundamental problem of the period of the judges appears here as a rupture in spiritual memory. Covenant continuity requires the works of God to be passed from one generation to another.
