Verse 25 is found in chapter 6 of Judges. God commands Gideon to tear down his father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole. Before confronting Midian, Gideon must confront idolatry within his own household. He carries out the action at night because of fear, showing that his obedience still coexists with fear. The account presents cultic reform as an essential part of national deliverance.
