Verse 30 is found in chapter 6 of Judges. The city discovers that Gideon destroyed Baal’s altar and demands his death. Joash, Gideon’s father, responds ironically that if Baal is truly a god, he should defend himself. The episode discredits Baal’s supposed ability to protect even his own altar. From then on Gideon receives the name Jerubbaal, associated with the controversy against Baal.
