Verse 4 is found in chapter 7 of Judges. God deliberately reduces Gideon’s army so that Israel will not attribute the victory to its own strength. First those who are afraid are allowed to return, and then the men are separated according to how they drink water. The army is reduced to three hundred. The reduction is not an accidental weakness but a theological strategy designed to make clear that deliverance comes from God.
