And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

Verse 13 is found in chapter 9 of Judges. Jotham speaks from Mount Gerizim through the parable of the trees. The useful trees refuse to rule, while the thornbush accepts power and threatens to destroy the others. The parable criticizes Abimelech’s desire for rule without turning it into an abstract theory of leadership: its application is specifically directed toward the alliance between Abimelech and Shechem. Jotham also announces that the violent pact between them will eventually destroy both sides.
