Verse 35 is found in chapter 9 of Judges. Abimelech organizes an ambush against Shechem and defeats its inhabitants. He then destroys the city and sows it with salt, while the tower of Shechem becomes a refuge for many inhabitants. Abimelech burns the tower, killing those who had taken refuge there. The violence of his rise to power is now reproduced against the very city that initially supported him.
