Verse 38 is found in chapter 16 of Numbers. The censers used in the rebellion are turned into plates to cover the altar. What was an instrument of rebellion becomes a memorial warning for Israel. The memorial function of the metal shows that even a past judgment must become a lasting lesson for subsequent generations. The altar remains associated with the legitimacy of the priestly service established by God.
