Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.

Verse 11 is found in chapter 22 of Numbers. Balak, king of Moab, fears Israel and sends messengers to hire Balaam to curse the people. Balaam consults God and initially receives a prohibition against going with them. The narrative thus introduces the central conflict of this section: Balak seeks to use Balaam’s religious authority against Israel, while God determines in advance the limits of what can be spoken concerning his people.
