And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.

Verse 18 is found in chapter 22 of Numbers. Balak sends a more important delegation and offers Balaam greater honors. God eventually permits him to go, but the permission is accompanied by strict instructions. The episode shows that divine permission to undertake an action should not be interpreted as approval of every human intention associated with it. Balaam remains bound to an assignment whose ultimate purpose will be subjected to God’s control.
