Verse 54 is found in chapter 33 of Numbers. In the plains of Moab, God commands Israel to destroy the Canaanite cultic objects and distribute the land by lot. The warning that the remaining inhabitants could become thorns and adversaries shows that entering Canaan is not merely about acquiring territory. Israel must remove religious practices that would threaten covenant faithfulness and avoid cultic coexistence with them.
