Verse 3 is found in chapter 10 of Proverbs. Chapter 10 begins an extensive collection of brief proverbs traditionally attributed to Solomon. The contrast between a wise son and a foolish son introduces themes that recur throughout the collection: diligence, righteousness, wealth, honesty, and control of speech. The sayings do not describe a mechanical formula for every circumstance, but moral patterns through which the reader learns to discern the usual direction of particular behaviors.
