Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

Verse 2 is found in chapter 21 of Proverbs. The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, an affirmation of divine sovereignty applied directly to political power. At the same time, God values justice and righteousness above ritual sacrifices offered without obedience. The way of the guilty is crooked, while the righteous act uprightly. The section refuses to separate worship from ethics: religious practices do not replace justice.
