Verse 1 is found in chapter 110 of Psalms. Psalm 110 is a royal psalm presenting the king seated at God’s right hand and exercising authority over his enemies. The figure of the priest according to the order of Melchizedek combines royal and priestly functions in a unique way within the Psalter. The language of victory and judgment describes the establishment of a government granted by God. In later Christian tradition, this psalm became especially important for interpreting the identity and authority of Jesus.
