For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.

Verse 24 is found in chapter 22 of Psalms. Psalm 22 begins with an extreme experience of abandonment and ends with a universal proclamation of God’s faithfulness. The contrast between the apparent absence of an answer and the memory of how God helped the ancestors sustains the plea. Images of animals, violence, and vulnerability describe total threat. The second half transforms lament into praise and extends the announcement of salvation from the individual to generations and peoples.

Rühmet den HERRN, die ihr ihn fürchtet; es ehre ihn aller Same Jakobs, und vor ihm scheue sich aller Same Israels.
