Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.

Verse 1 is found in chapter 4 of Psalms. Psalm 4 develops an evening prayer in which the psalmist responds to those who pursue falsehood and seek to replace trust in God with vanity. The initial expression of distress gives way to an exhortation to fear the Lord, examine the heart, and offer righteous sacrifices. The conclusion is especially significant: the joy God grants surpasses the security associated with material abundance and enables the psalmist to sleep in peace.
