Verse 5 is found in chapter 78 of Psalms. Psalm 78 is an extensive historical and wisdom poem recounting Israel’s unfaithfulness and God’s patience. Its explicit purpose is to transmit divine works to future generations so they will not forget his commandments. The psalm recalls rebellion in the wilderness, unbelief, idolatry, and failure, but also divine compassion. The choice of David as shepherd at the end connects the history of the people with the responsibility of faithful leadership.
