Verse 1 is found in chapter 11 of Revelation. John is given a measuring reed like a staff to measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there, but he is told to leave out the outer court because it has been given to the nations. Measuring may communicate delimitation, belonging, or preservation, while the exclusion of the outer court introduces an experience of vulnerability. The period of forty-two months establishes a limited duration for the activity of the nations.
