Verse 9 is found in chapter 11 of Revelation. When they finish their testimony, the beast that rises from the abyss wages war against them, conquers them, and kills them. Their corpses remain exposed in the great city, symbolically identified as Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was also crucified. The nations celebrate their death and exchange gifts because the witnesses had tormented the inhabitants of the earth through their proclamation. The passage shows the apparent victory of hostile power over prophetic testimony.
