Verse 7 is found in chapter 2 of Revelation. The message to Ephesus recognizes its works, labor, perseverance, and doctrinal discernment, especially its rejection of those who claim to be apostles but are not. However, the community has abandoned its first love. The exhortation to remember, repent, and return to its first works shows that doctrinal faithfulness does not replace the love that should characterize the life of the church. The call to hear what the Spirit says and the promise of the tree of life connect this church’s perseverance with the final hope of the book.
