I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

Verse 9 is found in chapter 2 of Revelation. The message to Smyrna addresses a community experiencing tribulation and poverty, although Christ declares it rich. The opposition it faces is described in terms of religious conflict and suffering, and a trial limited in duration is announced. Unlike Ephesus, there is no direct moral rebuke. The central exhortation is to remain faithful until death. The crown of life and the promise of not suffering harm from the second death place present suffering within an eschatological perspective in which physical death does not have the final word.
