And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.

Verse 17 is found in chapter 21 of Revelation. The city is measured with a golden reed and turns out to be a cube of extraordinary and equal dimensions. Its measurements and the description of gold, precious stones, and pearls communicate perfection, splendor, and holiness. The gates are pearls and the street is transparent gold. The symbolism recalls the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle and temple, whose cubic form indicated the space of maximum divine presence. The new Jerusalem thus appears as the reality in which God’s presence permeates the entire city.
