Verse 1 is found in chapter 3 of Revelation. Sardis receives one of the most severe evaluations: it has a reputation for being alive, but it is dead. The difference between outward reputation and spiritual reality forms the core of the message. Christ commands it to wake up, strengthen what remains, and remember what it received and heard. Yet there are still a few who have not stained their garments. The image of white garments anticipates the language of purity and victory that reappears later. The promise to confess the victor’s name before the Father connects public perseverance with heavenly recognition.
