Verse 9 is found in chapter 6 of Revelation. When the fifth seal is opened, John sees beneath the altar the souls of those who were killed because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. Their cry for justice is not presented as a denial of divine sovereignty, but as a request for judgment. They receive white robes and are told to wait until the number of their fellow servants is complete. The passage affirms that the suffering of the martyrs is not forgotten and that divine justice has an appointed time.
