Verse 10 is found in chapter 8 of Revelation. With the third trumpet, a great star called Wormwood falls from heaven upon the rivers and springs of water. The waters become bitter and many people die from drinking them. Wormwood was known in prophetic language as an image of bitterness and calamity. The passage reverses the life-giving function of water: what normally sustains life becomes an instrument of judgment.
