Verse 12 is found in chapter 8 of Revelation. The fourth trumpet darkens a third of the sun, moon, and stars, reducing the light of day and night. Before the remaining three trumpets, an eagle announces three "woes," indicating that the coming judgments will be even more severe. The structure progressively intensifies the vision. The reduction of light also recalls prophetic language concerning the day of the Lord and prepares the setting for the images of darkness associated with judgment.
