Verse 5 is found in chapter 9 of Revelation. The fifth trumpet opens the abyss and releases a multitude described as locusts with extraordinary features. Their mission is not to destroy vegetation, as ordinary locusts do, but to torment for five months those who do not have the seal of God. The image combines elements of plague, warfare, and monstrosity. The pain is so intense that people seek death without finding it. The contrast between those who bear God’s seal and those who suffer the torment maintains the distinction between divine belonging and judgment.
