Verse 2 is found in chapter 1 of Ruth. Elimelech, Naomi, and their two sons settle in Moab. The mention of their names preserves the family’s Israelite identity, while the move introduces the foreign setting where much of the story will unfold. The presence of a family from Judah in Moab also prepares the central theme of Ruth: the incorporation of a foreign woman into the people of God.
