Verse 13 is found in chapter 10 of 1 Chronicles. The Chronicler gives an explicit theological interpretation of Saul’s death: he died because of his unfaithfulness and because he consulted a medium instead of seeking God. These verses explain why the account focuses less on military tragedy and more on Saul’s broken relationship with God and the transfer of the kingdom to David.
