Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.

Verse 3 is found in chapter 11 of 1 Chronicles. The tribes of Israel recognize David as king at Hebron and recall that God had promised he would rule. The coronation brings the various tribes together under one king. The episode presents Israel’s unification as fulfillment of a divine word and as the political consolidation of a reality already begun during David’s reign in Judah.
