Verse 31 is found in chapter 1 of 1 Kings. David publicly reaffirms his oath that Solomon will be king after him and orders that he be anointed. The decision ends the uncertainty surrounding the succession. Solomon does not obtain the throne by leading a rebellion, but through David’s designation and priestly and prophetic anointing. The episode establishes from the beginning a distinction between power someone attempts to seize and legitimacy received within the established order.
