Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant's sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes:

Verse 34 is found in chapter 11 of 1 Kings. The prophet Ahijah meets Jeroboam and symbolizes the future division of the kingdom by tearing a garment into pieces. Ten tribes will be given to Jeroboam, while one portion will remain with the house of David. The stated reason is Solomon’s idolatry. However, God promises not to completely destroy the Davidic dynasty because of David. The political division is therefore interpreted as the consequence of a spiritual rupture.
