For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

Verse 4 is found in chapter 11 of 1 Kings. Solomon loves many foreign women and eventually follows their gods. The text directly connects his marriages with the turning away of his heart. Unlike the request for wisdom in 3:9, the king’s heart is now no longer fully directed toward the Lord. Idolatry does not appear as a sudden change, but as the result of relationships and practices that progressively alter the ruler’s faithfulness.
