Verse 8 is found in chapter 12 of 1 Kings. Rehoboam first consults the elders who had served Solomon and then the young men who had grown up with him. The elders recommend serving the people and speaking kindly to them, while the young men advise increasing the burden even further. The scene contrasts two conceptions of power: authority as service or authority as a demonstration of strength. Rehoboam’s decision will be decisive for the kingdom’s future.
