Verse 22 is found in chapter 2 of 1 Kings. Adonijah attempts to obtain Abishag through Bathsheba. Solomon interprets the request as a political threat because taking a woman associated with the king could be understood as a claim to the throne. The apparently matrimonial request thus acquires succession-related significance. Solomon orders Adonijah executed, removing the main rival who had attempted to seize the crown before his appointment.
