Verse 19 is found in chapter 10 of 1 Samuel. Samuel gathers the people at Mizpah to formally establish the monarchy. Through the selection process Saul is identified, but he hides among the baggage, displaying an initial attitude of reserve or insecurity. When presented, he physically stands above the people. Some welcome him enthusiastically, while others despise him. The chapter ends by noting that Saul remains silent before his critics, leaving open the question of how he will respond once he possesses effective authority.
