Verse 49 is found in chapter 14 of 1 Samuel. The summary of Saul’s campaigns presents a militarily active king who fights various enemies of Israel. Nevertheless, the established tension remains: Saul’s military effectiveness will not resolve the problem of his relationship with the word of the Lord.
