For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

Verse 5 is found in chapter 19 of 1 Samuel. Jonathan intercedes for David before Saul and reminds him that David has served the kingdom and won victories for Israel. His defense shows loyalty that does not depend on immediate political interests. Saul temporarily listens to his son and promises not to kill David. The scene demonstrates that the king’s hostility is not yet irreversible, but also reveals the fragility of his promises. Jonathan acts as mediator between two people whose relationship is increasingly marked by suspicion.
