And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.

Verse 42 is found in chapter 20 of 1 Samuel. Jonathan communicates through the arrows that David must flee. They weep together and renew their covenant before separating. David is definitively outside the court and begins his period as a fugitive. The scene is one of the clearest expressions of covenant friendship in biblical narrative. Jonathan gains no political advantage by supporting David; instead, his loyalty costs him a rupture with his own father.
