Verse 17 is found in chapter 23 of 1 Samuel. David consults the Lord again when he discovers that Saul is approaching and receives information about the attitude of Keilah’s inhabitants. He then meets Jonathan, who strengthens his confidence in God. Jonathan states that David will reign over Israel and that he will be second to him. This declaration is extraordinary because Jonathan is the king’s son and natural heir to the dynasty. His recognition of David shows voluntary acceptance of divine choice over his own dynastic expectations.
