Verse 13 is found in chapter 3 of 1 Samuel. Samuel’s first prophetic message confirms the judgment announced against Eli’s household. The severity of the announcement is related to the persistence of priestly corruption and Eli’s inability to correct it. Samuel must communicate a difficult message precisely to the person who has guided him. The passage shows that the prophetic role is not to say what is pleasant, but to faithfully transmit the received word. Eli’s response, finally accepting the Lord’s judgment, contrasts with his earlier inability to control his sons.
