Verse 2 is found in chapter 3 of 1 Samuel. Samuel’s calling begins by noting that the word of the Lord was rare and visions were uncommon. The repeated calling during the night shows the process by which Samuel learns to recognize the divine voice. Eli, although belonging to a priestly house under judgment, ultimately helps the young man respond correctly: Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. The scene establishes Samuel as a prophet and presents obedient listening as the condition for receiving and transmitting God’s word.

Ed avvenne in quel giorno, che Eli, la cui vista cominciava a scemare, talchè egli non poteva più vedere, giacendo nel suo luogo;
