Verse 2 is found in chapter 4 of 1 Samuel. Israel’s defeat by the Philistines leads to a theologically misguided decision: bringing the ark of the covenant into battle as though its presence automatically guaranteed victory. The people treat the ark as an object capable of producing results rather than recognizing the God associated with it. The capture of the ark and the deaths of Hophni and Phinehas fulfill the judgment announced against Eli’s household. The scene demonstrates that sacred symbols cannot become substitutes for obedience to God.
