And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
A verse can bring hope. Share this message of faith with someone you care about.
Verse 1 is found in chapter 5 of 1 Samuel. The Philistines take the ark to Ashdod and place it beside the idol Dagon. The result reverses the logic of military victory: although Israel was defeated, Israel’s God has not been defeated. Dagon’s fall before the ark functions as a narrative demonstration of divine superiority over the Philistine deity. The idol’s second fall, with even more humiliating consequences, reinforces the idea that the Lord cannot be reduced to a territorial deity subject to the military circumstances of his people.
