And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

Verse 3 is found in chapter 5 of 1 Samuel. The Philistines take the ark to Ashdod and place it beside the idol Dagon. The result reverses the logic of military victory: although Israel was defeated, Israel’s God has not been defeated. Dagon’s fall before the ark functions as a narrative demonstration of divine superiority over the Philistine deity. The idol’s second fall, with even more humiliating consequences, reinforces the idea that the Lord cannot be reduced to a territorial deity subject to the military circumstances of his people.
