Verse 1 is found in chapter 11 of 2 Chronicles. Rehoboam gathers an army to recover the northern tribes, but God commands him not to fight against his brothers. The command acknowledges the political division without turning it into authorization for civil war. Rehoboam’s obedience at this moment prevents a confrontation that would have deepened the rupture of the people.
