Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

Verse 18 is found in chapter 1 of 2 Kings. Elijah personally communicates to Ahaziah the same verdict he had announced to his messengers: the king will die because he sought Baal-zebub instead of consulting the God of Israel. Ahaziah’s death and Joram’s succession close the episode by showing that the prophetic word is fulfilled despite the decisions of political power. The chapter establishes one of the recurring principles of 2 Kings: kings may rule temporarily, form alliances, and send armies, but they have no authority to alter the judgment pronounced by God.
