In the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah king of Judah Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned seventeen years.

Verse 1 is found in chapter 13 of 2 Kings. Jehoahaz reigns over Israel during a period in which Hazael oppresses the kingdom. The text states that Jehoahaz seeks the Lord and that the Lord hears his plea, although the sinful structure inherited from Jeroboam remains. The tension is significant: God responds mercifully to the king’s distress, but there is no complete reform of the religious system. Israel receives temporary relief and retains part of its territory, although it remains militarily weakened. The passage presents both judgment for unfaithfulness and mercy in response to affliction.
