And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.

Verse 9 is found in chapter 14 of 2 Kings. Amaziah challenges Joash of Israel, using language of pride and provocation that Joash answers with a parable about the thistle and the cedar. Amaziah persists, and the two kings confront one another. Judah is defeated, and Jerusalem suffers political humiliation with part of the wall demolished and treasures plundered. The episode shows the danger of interpreting a previous victory as a guarantee of permanent superiority. The narrative also uses irony: a simple parable had warned about Amaziah’s limits, but his ambition led him to ignore it.
